Description

BolognaFiere is one of Italy's leading exhibition grounds, located in the northern district of Bologna (Fiera District) in Emilia-Romagna. The site totals around 375,000 sqm of surface area, including a substantial covered portion and outdoor spaces, and is organised around a business district marked by the seven towers designed by Kenzō Tange (visible from the A14 motorway, delivered progressively from the early 1980s onwards, following the Tange project initiated in 1967).

The Fiera District's urban master plan stems from a competition won by the Italian architects Leonardo Benevolo, Tommaso Giura Longo and Carlo Melograni (Wikipedia IT, Fiera di Bologna). Kenzō Tange is the author of the seven-towers project integrated into the plan, as well as of a Northern master plan first presented in 1970 for the city's northern district.

The trade fair district is operated by BolognaFiere S.p.A., a joint-stock company formed in 2002 from the transformation of the Ente Autonomo delle Fiere di Bologna (created in 1947 at the initiative of the Bologna Chamber of Commerce). The first block of the modern grounds was inaugurated in 1965 for the 29th edition of the Bologna Fair.

The current principal shareholders are the Comune di Bologna (~14.7%), the Camera di Commercio di Bologna (~14.7%), the Emilia-Romagna Region (~11.6%), the Città Metropolitana di Bologna (~11.3%), the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna and GL events Italia (~7.7%), alongside other investors. Since December 2023, the ordinary shares of BolognaFiere S.p.A. have been admitted to trading on Euronext Growth Milan, Professional Segment.

Beyond the Bologna grounds, BolognaFiere holds international events activities, notably through the Cosmoprof network (Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas, Cosmoprof Asia in Hong Kong, Cosmoprof India in Mumbai) and numerous specialised trade shows run in partnership across more than 10 countries.

Halls

The grounds comprise 18 padiglioni (halls), all cabled and air-conditioned (AEFI, BolognaFiere, Wikipedia IT). The numbering follows the site's expansion history:

  • Historic core inaugurated in 1965: padiglioni 21, 22, 25, 26, 31, 32
  • 2000s extensions: padiglioni 16-18 (2004), 14-15 (2008)
  • Recent extensions: padiglioni 29-30 (2018)

The halls are linked by covered galleries that serve the entire site from several independent entrances, including the Costituzione entrance (city side) and the Michelino entrance (motorway side). In total, the site has 5 independent entrances for visitors and exhibitors (BolognaFiere, Location).

The site also includes several service centres (Centro Servizi, Palazzo dei Congressi with its adjoining Europauditorium auditorium) as well as a set of meeting rooms for conferences and side events.

Access & transport

Train: Bologna Centrale station, served by the Italian high-speed trains Frecciarossa and Italo and the entire regional network, is located around 6 km from the grounds. Bologna is one of northern Italy's main railway hubs, with direct connections to Milan, Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples.

Dedicated shuttle: during major trade shows, a direct shuttle bus links Bologna Centrale to the Costituzione entrance of the grounds.

Car: the grounds are accessible from the A14 motorway via the dedicated Bologna Fiera exit, as well as via the Bologna tangenziale (ring road). The site has around 14,500 parking spaces (BolognaFiere, Location), split between visitor car parks, exhibitor car parks and heavy-goods logistics areas.

Airport: the international airport Bologna-Guglielmo Marconi is around 6 km from the grounds. An automated People Mover link connects the airport to Bologna Centrale in around 7 minutes.

Urban bus: several lines of the TPER network serve the entrances to the grounds from Bologna city centre, in addition to the event shuttle.

Services

Catering: seated dining and quick-service food points, cafés and catering corners distributed across the halls and galleries during trade shows. An on-stand catering offer is available to exhibitors through the service providers listed by BolognaFiere.

Exhibitor services: business centre, equipped meeting rooms, technical services (electricity, water, telecoms), furniture hire and turnkey stands, plus logistics and customs assistance for international exhibitors.

Connectivity: WiFi available across the halls and reception areas, sized to suit major international trade shows.

Nearby accommodation: several hotels are located immediately next to the grounds, including the Savoia Hotel Regency and the Sheraton Bologna Hotel & Conference Center. Bologna's historic centre, around 15 minutes away by taxi, concentrates most of the 4-5 star hotel offer.

News

Since 2018, BolognaFiere has been running a multi-year programme to modernise and expand the grounds worth around 100 million euros, including the progressive renovation of the historic padiglioni and the development of a new western hub (West Hall) intended to increase usable exhibition space and improve visitor flow during major events (BolognaFiere, Location).

Internationally, BolognaFiere is consolidating its position as a global cosmetics platform: the company directly operates Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas, Cosmoprof Asia in Hong Kong and Cosmoprof India in Mumbai, in partnership with local players in the sector.
