Agoris analysis · updated November 2026

Key points

  • The Congrès International de Métrologie (CIM, the International Metrology Congress) is the biennial congress of the measurement community: national metrology laboratories, accreditation bodies, industrial users and instrument manufacturers. It is organised by the Collège Français de Métrologie (CFM).
  • Next edition: the 23rd, CIM2027, from Monday 15 to Thursday 18 March 2027 at Eurexpo Lyon, in Chassieu.
  • The CIM is not a standalone trade show: it takes place inside Global Industrie, which is the main event and fills Eurexpo on the same dates. The CIM brings its conference programme and a 1,000 m² exhibition area, the Metrology Village, set in the heart of the show's MCVI zone (Measurement, Control, Vision and Instrumentation). Global Industrie's figures are not the CIM's and are not used here.
  • The organiser expects 600 participants from 45 countries in 2027. Results for the 2025 edition: 500 participants from 40 countries and 60 exhibitors over 1,000 m².
  • Registration for the congress is paid and includes free access to the Global Industrie trade show. For an exhibitor, each stand in the Metrology Village includes congress invitations and access to the gala evening.

Who exhibits

Typical profile

The Metrology Village brings together companies and institutions specialising in the science of measurement: calibration and metrology services, precision instrumentation, sensors, measurement and equipment-management software, accreditation and quality assurance. One feature sets it apart from a conventional industrial trade show: national metrology institutes exhibit alongside manufacturers, so the village is a place where the supplier of a measurement standard meets both its industrial customer and the institute that guarantees the traceability of the measurement.

The village sits next to the rest of Global Industrie's MCVI zone, home to other exhibitors in three-dimensional measurement, machine vision and inspection: visitors can move from one to the other in a few steps, the MCVI zone being described as adjacent to the village.

Notable exhibitors

The 2027 list of exhibitors and sponsors is published and updated as registrations come in (status as of 12 October 2026 on the congress website, and 21 October 2026 on the CFM website).

The 2027 sponsors listed are Trescal, presented as the principal sponsor of the congress, Panran, Testo Industrial Services, CETIAT and EURAMET. Exhibitors already registered in the Metrology Village include LNE, the British NPL, the Dutch VSL, Beamex, Chauvin Arnoux, Marposs, Polytec, Radwag, Spektra and WIKA Instruments.

Visitor quality

For 2027 the organiser describes an audience made up of 55% end users from industry and 45% official bodies and research laboratories. The profiles targeted are measurement process managers, quality managers, engineers, decision makers, academics and researchers, across all sectors: mechanical engineering, laboratories, chemistry, health, cosmetics, the environment and energy.

These are targets announced ahead of the edition, not an audited result. For 2025, the CFM publishes 500 participants from 40 countries. No OJS certification or third-party audit of attendance is published.

Events & community

Conference programme

The 2027 programme is published. It runs over four days, with more than 200 oral and poster presentations, 21 parallel oral sessions from Monday afternoon to Thursday morning, two poster sessions and a calendar of networking events. The themes that come up most often are digital metrology and digital calibration certificates (DCC), artificial intelligence, quantum metrology, thermometry, gas and flow, the energy transition, industrial metrology and accreditation.

Announced highlights:

  • Monday 15 March, morning: MetriQs workshop on metrology for quantum technologies, hosted by LNE and its partners.
  • Tuesday 16 March, 11:00 to 12:30: plenary session "New horizons in metrology", with experts from NPL, PMOD/WRC and INRiM.
  • Five round tables, Monday to Wednesday: "Metrology for evidence-based Policy Making", "How can metrology meet the needs of the "New Defence"?", "Metrology for Quantum Computing", "Metrology meets AI: confidence in the Age of Prediction" and "Is ISO 10012:2026 a new deal for Industrial Metrology?".
  • Thursday 18 March, 9:00 to 10:30: short course "Food Metrology, from Farm to Fork", on measurement across the food chain.

The call for papers is closed. Papers from the 2025 edition were published in a collection of articles in EPJ Web of Conferences.

Scientific governance

The congress relies on an organising committee and a scientific and technical committee, chaired for 2027 by four individuals. The opening session on Monday 15 March at 13:30 brings together the co-chairs representing industry and science, the DGE and Trescal; the announced speakers include Philippe Richard (METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology) and Frédéric Barbaresco (Thales), two of the four committee chairs.

Community & networks

The CFM lists among its organising and supporting partners Global Industrie, the BIPM, the OIML, EURAMET, EUROLAB, COFRAC, LNE, Germany's PTB, Italy's INRiM, METAS, VTT MIKES and CETIAT, as well as industrial companies such as Safran, Thales, Nestlé, EssilorLuxottica and Mettler Toledo.

The gala evening, "Silk & Velvet", takes place on Tuesday 16 March from 19:30 to 23:30 at the Grand Réfectoire of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu in Lyon: a cocktail followed by a seated dinner. It is part of the congress ticket and can also be bought separately.

On site: what to know

The congress is held at Eurexpo Lyon, on boulevard de l'Europe in Chassieu, halfway between Lyon city centre and Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport. Tramway T5 serves the Eurexpo stop. From Lyon Part-Dieu station, allow about 50 minutes by public transport (T1, metro D then T5) or 40 minutes by taxi; from Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport, about 25 minutes by taxi. By car, access is via the A46 (eastern ring road) or the A43, depending on where you are coming from.

For accommodation, the partner Revolugo has blocked rooms at negotiated rates for CIM participants and Global Industrie visitors in hotels near the site.

On-site translation is announced for the conference programme.

Exhibiting in the Metrology Village

The CIM does not publish a stand price list: prices are provided on quotation via the booking form. The formats are, however, detailed: stands from 9 m², in the Village, Essentiel or Silver versions, a Premium stand from 15 m², or bare floor space for a custom-built stand. Three sponsorship packs, each with a stand, give access to the best locations and more invitations.

Each stand includes a registration pack, a stand open on one side, one to three congress invitations, access to the gala evening, daily cleaning, security, electricity and a listing in the Global Industrie exhibitor list.

Planning your visit

For exhibitors

  • The Metrology Village's first selling point is cross access: a stand gives a presence in Global Industrie and places at the congress. Decide in advance which colleagues will attend the sessions and which will staff the stand.
  • Target the break slots and the village pitches, which the organiser places at the heart of the exchanges.
  • Identify the sessions in your field in the programme (thermometry, flow measurement, dimensional metrology, DCC) to meet the relevant buyers there.
  • Book early: the village is announced on a dedicated 1,000 m² area.

For participants

  • Register before 20 November 2026 for the early bird rate, then before 12 February 2027 for the regular rate.
  • Choose your days according to the highlights: quantum workshop on Monday morning, plenary and gala on Tuesday, short course on Thursday morning.
  • Make use of the free access to Global Industrie included in the ticket to visit the MCVI zone and the rest of the trade show.

CSR policy & initiatives

The congress website provides a CO2 emissions calculator on its travel and stay page, and details public transport and cycling access to Eurexpo. Beyond this tool, neither the CIM website nor the CFM website presents a formal CSR policy, a carbon footprint for the event or ISO 20121 certification.

As the congress is hosted inside Global Industrie, a large part of its logistical footprint falls to the host trade show and the exhibition park, whose initiatives can be found on their own websites.

Trajectory analysis

The CIM is a long-established congress: its first edition was held in Bordeaux in 1983, on the initiative of Pierre Barbier, founder of the Collège Français de Métrologie. It has since moved to a biennial rhythm, in odd-numbered years.

The defining choice of the most recent editions is the link with Global Industrie. Rather than organising a standalone exhibition, the CFM sets up its village in the measurement zone of France's major industrial trade show. For the exhibitor, the stand sits inside Global Industrie, is listed in its exhibitor list and rubs shoulders with congress participants. The organiser does not specify to what extent visitors to the trade show can access the village.

The content follows the changes in the profession. After a workshop on the digital transformation of the quality infrastructure and a first short course on the ISO/IEC 17025 standard in 2025, the 2027 edition puts quantum technologies, artificial intelligence and the ISO 10012:2026 standard to the fore, a sign of a metrology that now thinks as much in data as in measurement standards.

All data that does not cite a source comes from the organiser's website.

Unless otherwise stated, all factual data in this listing comes from the organiser's official website (cim-metrology.org).
